What If Your Next Million Dollar Idea Started With a Pillowcase?

Casino Executives: Are We So Focused on the Next Million-Dollar Trend That We’re Overlooking the Little Things?

Recently, while checking out of a casino hotel, I overheard a guest asking the front desk whether he could purchase a pillowcase.

Yes, a pillowcase!

He absolutely loved the linens. He said they were the most comfortable he had ever experienced. I smiled because, after more than three decades in the gaming industry selling innovation, that simple conversation reminded me of something incredibly important.

Sometimes, what brings a customer back isn’t the million-dollar promotion, the newest slot machine, or the spectacular new amenity. Sometimes, it’s a simple pillowcase.

We spend so much time looking for the next BIG thing that we sometimes overlook the hundreds of small opportunities to improve the customer experience.

And I see a similar challenge when it comes to innovation.

Today, getting a meeting with a casino executive to introduce a new technology or business concept has become increasingly difficult. Unless a solution promises millions in immediate revenue, it can struggle to get the attention it deserves.

I understand why. Casino executives are under enormous pressure to deliver results, control costs, and protect their operations.

But I wonder whether, in our pursuit of the next big breakthrough, we’re becoming too reluctant to explore smaller innovations that could make a meaningful difference in the customer experience.

What if a technology could generate just 1% more revenue?

What if it could improve customer retention by 2%?

What if it could reduce operational friction, make employees more productive, or simply give guests another reason to return?

Individually, these hypothetical improvements may not seem revolutionary. But collectively, across thousands of guests and millions of transactions, small gains can become enormously valuable.

Innovation doesn’t always require a multimillion-dollar investment.

Sometimes it begins with a conversation, a small pilot, or simply being willing to listen.

And this applies equally to listening to our customers and to the innovators bringing fresh ideas into our industry.

A meeting is not a commitment to purchase. A pilot is not a commitment to roll out. But refusing to explore new ideas may mean missing opportunities we never knew existed.

That’s also where the art of strategic partnerships begins: recognizing a shared opportunity, understanding what each side brings, and exploring whether there’s a practical fit.

At Profound, that curiosity is central to how we connect people, ideas, and opportunities across gaming and hospitality.

After more than three decades in gaming, I remain convinced that some of the best opportunities come from staying curious, keeping an open mind, and saying yes to a conversation.

So here is my question to casino executives:

“When was the last time you gave an innovator 30 minutes of your time, not because they promised you millions, but because they might make your customers just a little bit happier?”

Sometimes the next big opportunity starts with something as small as a pillowcase.
